How often have you read over the years about someone rich and famous suffering from depression?

Have you asked yourself how that is possible when so much in modern society revolves around wealth, power and success?

Well, it is eminently possible because depression comes in many forms and only marginally relates to lifestyle as such. It is difficult to grasp because if you are generally happy with your life, then why would you become depressed as a ‘’condition’’?

Significant numbers of people seek help with depression, and it has to be said that it is controllable in most instances, though rarely completely curable.

Depression as a ‘’condition’’ needs to be separated from a temporary period of depression which may be the result of the break up of a relationship, the death of a member of the family or a friend, or even a sporting result. That is a feeling that fades over time. Not so, the ‘’condition’’ known as depression.

Depression comes in many forms. In general, symptoms come in several forms from having little interest in doing anything to insomnia, weight loss, lack of concentration and even sadly thoughts of suicide. Doctors can generally identify symptoms that persist over time, and therapists are available to help. Doctors may prescribe different forms of medication with antidepressants the main thing that will be prescribed. However, they are not a cure like antibiotics cure infection.
The important thing for a sufferer is to recognize the problem and be proactive in trying to do everything possible to control feelings of hopelessness and helplessness. That may be difficult because the symptoms are often directly opposite from the behavior that a sufferer should show in seeking a solution to their problem.

Behavioral therapy is a way to control depression but that is dependent upon having the time to attend regular sessions, and the resources as well. Depression is not a rich man’s ‘’disease’’; it can happen to anyone.

One form of treatment that is used today depending on the severity of the depression is electroconvulsive therapy which seeks to stimulate the brain when all else has failed.
If you think this all sounds a little daunting, then perhaps you are right? Sufferers need to have the will to improve their situation and some of the publicity about high profile people who suffer from depression can be a boost to someone who then realizes he or she is not alone. If that helps then great.

It is thought that some foods and supplements that provide vitamins and minerals on a daily basis represent self-help. Milk, a source of vitamin D, poultry which provides protein, nuts for their selenium, fresh vegetables, seafood containing B12 and omega-3 fatty acids and B9 from greens all help. Alcohol and junk food certainly don’t.

It would be wrong to underestimate how common depression is in society across all stratas. This is why companies offering advice on healthy foods and supplements are so valuable running alongside the advice provided by the medical community.
